Vietnam bust bnline gambling rings linked to 12bet

Online gambling was a hot topic in Vietnam this week as Ho Chi Minh City police shut down an illegal gambling ring linked to online betting operator 12Bet. On Friday, police detained 10 people, including To Cong Hung, the owner of the Vietnamese version of gay lifestyle magazine Attitude.

Police say the ring operated a website that connected local gamblers with the Philippine-based 12Bet. Hung reportedly ran the website, while his sister and other agents controlled bank accounts through which money was collected from and distributed to gamblers. Police had monitored the site for months, during which time the operators handled over VND 1t (US $46.8m) in wagers.

Friday also saw police commence legal proceedings against 36 individuals arrested in July as part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup betting crackdown. This ring was linked to another Philippines-based site, M88.com, considered one of the predominant sites catering to Vietnamese punters. Before police swooped in, the site handled over VND 1.4t in wagers.

Also on Friday, police in Ba Ria Vung Tau province deported six South Korean nationals for operating an illegal betting site out of a rented villa in Vung Tau City. The operation catered not to locals but to gamblers in South Korea, who set up around 4k accounts with the site and wagered over KRW 20b ($18.6m) before police moved in on Wednesday.

Thanh Nien News reported that local police detected signs of illegality in the villa then took their findings to South Korean police, who confirmed the interaction with local gamblers. The arrested individuals claimed they had been dispatched to Vietnam by another Korean named Choi Hojun. Vietnam deported 33 other South Koreans for much the same activity last July.

AsianLogic to buy 12Bet

AsianLogic has agreed terms to acquire fellow Asian operator 12Bet for an undisclosed sum.

AsianLogic chief executive Kan Tang said the addition of 12Bet’s sportsbook strength would complement AsianLogic’s existing casino P2P brands.

“We can now offer our customers a comprehensive ‘best-of-breed’ suite of gaming products. The respective management teams have known each other for many years, so it’s also a great fit going forward operationally especially as we both use the same sportsbook and casino platform providers,” said Tang.

The underlying structures of AsianLogic and 12Bet, both licensed in the Phillippines but with European licences in Alderney and the Isle of Man respectively, will be integrated under a newly formed but as yet unnamed holding company.

Asian Poker Tour owner AsianLogic completed its delisting from London’s AIM exchange last July in response to low trading volumes in its shares since listing on the market in late 2007. It had previously declared its intention to focus on its higher margin Asian deposit business following the sale of its wholesale business.

12Bet, which today signed a deal to sponsor snooker’s UK Championship alongside its one-year sponsorship of snooker’s World Open, was granted a licence in September by the Isle of Man Supervision Commission in September. It also sponsors Sevilla FC in Spain and operates betting partnerships with English Premier League football teams Newcastle, WBA and Birmingham City.

Rory Anderson, chief executive for Europe for 12Bet added: “AsianLogic is very strong in the online casino and poker environment as well as controlling land-based brands such as the Asian Poker Tour, and being able to better offer these products to sportsbook customers should enhance revenues across the board.”

Sevilla announce 12bet sponsor deal

Spanish league club Sevilla have agreed a two-year shirt sponsorship deal with Asian online gaming company 12BET.

12BET.com is operated by Pacific Sea Invests SA, a remote gambling operator licensed in the Philippines, that offers sports betting products and services to European and Asian markets.

"We are enthusiastic about working with 12BET to accelerate the international development of our club," Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido was quoted as saying.

Sevilla, who won back-to-back UEFA Cups in 2006 and 2007, said their new sponsor would also be working on a number of other commercial projects with the club.

"We are investing a lot into the development of the 12BET brand and had been looking for a partner in the world of football for a long time," 12BET's director general Andrea Hector was quoted as saying.

"Sevilla had an excellent season last year qualifying directly for the Champions League group stages. We see this as an excellent opportunity to boost the international development of both brands."
