Major League Baseball picks MGM for betting partner

As the post-PASPA land-grab continues, Major League Baseball has become the third and latest US professional sports league to team up with MGM Resorts in a wide-ranging sports betting partnership.

The multi-year deal casts MGM Resorts as the first Official Gaming Partner of MLB and the Official Entertainment Partner of MLB.

The agreement combines the MLB with MGM Resorts and playMGM brands across league and team sponsorships, data usage in gaming, promotion across MLB media platforms and domestic and international activations at MLB events.

The deal with MLB follows similar betting partnerships between MGM and the NBA and NHL leagues; sealed in July and October respectively.

“We are pleased to partner with MGM Resorts International, a clear industry leader in the sports gaming area, to work together on bringing innovative experiences to baseball fans and MGM customers,” said baseball commissioner Robert D Manfred Jr.

“Our partnership with MGM will help us navigate this evolving space responsibly, and we look forward to the fan engagement opportunities ahead.”

MGM Resorts chairman and CEO Jim Murren added: “We are excited to enter into this historic partnership with MLB. We are thrilled to create a new one-of-a-kind fan experience for baseball fans.

“Combining MGM Resorts’ world class entertainment and technology with MLB data will continue to transform a rapidly changing industry. This partnership further amplifies the significance of our GVC joint venture, firmly establishing MGM Resorts and playMGM as the market leader in partnerships with major professional sports leagues.”

MLB intellectual property will appear in MGM advertising and promotional campaigns. MGM also will secure multiple MLB Club partnerships, will have a presence at MLB Jewel Events, including the All-Star Game and World Series.

In the US, MGM Resorts will promote the MLB brand and gaming options on MLB’s digital and broadcast platforms, including MLB Network, MLB.com and the MLB At Bat app.

MGM Resorts will also be identified as an MLB-Authorised Gaming Operator and utilise MLB’s official statistics feed, on a non-exclusive basis, across its digital and live domestic sports gaming options.

In Japan, MGM Resorts will be an official partner at grassroots baseball events like the MLB Road Show.

Professional Sports League Begin Preparations for Supreme Court’s Sports Betting Ruling

While the professional baseball teams in Arizona and Florida gear up for the upcoming 162-game season, the Major League Baseball officials are eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated sports betting ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States. If the Supreme Court repeals the apparently unconstitutional PASPA or Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, the individual states will be free to design their respective legislation for regulating and operating sports betting within their borders.

That being said, if the Supreme Court makes a favorable ruling, the fans of MLB in certain states might be able to place their legal bets on the upcoming tournament matches. As such, the MLB officials are now gearing up to prepare their teams and players by providing them dedicated training on sports wagering. In addition to this, the umpires and coaches of the MLB tournaments will also be provided proper sports betting training.

It is being speculated that before July this year, the Supreme Court is likely to announce its decision on what is being regarded as the most highly publicized federal lawsuit in a long long time. If the Supreme Court repeals the 25-year-old PASPA, it is literally going to bring about a drastic transformation in the concept of sports gambling in the United States. In the case of a revocation of the federal law that currently prohibits sports betting in all states but four, the individual states would be allowed to take their own decisions as to whether or not they want their citizens to sports wager.

In a conference with the local news reporters, the commissioner of the Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred outlined that they are quite optimistic about the promising future of sports betting in the country. In addition to the MLB, the other three major sports leagues in the US are also preparing their teams and officials for a possible change in the sports betting laws in the country.

Not only are these sports leagues educating their players about the concept of sports betting, but also are themselves constantly studying and monitoring sports betting data to be better equipped with the right information when the need arises. The sports leagues are also researching their various options in terms of new businesses and partnerships that might help enhance their revenue streams in the future.

Is Major League Baseball Ready To Embrace Sports Betting?

here is a new player in the realm of sports data and analysis, which comes by way of a merger between two notable technology companies – SportingPulse and Betgenius. The result is Genius Sports, a London-based data-driven solution provider for sports, media and regulated betting markets, employing over 750 people across 10 locations worldwide.

Because Genius Sports is a merger, it is not starting its business operations from scratch. It begins with a bounty of partners, including more than 100 leagues and sporting federations such as the English Premier League, La Liga, Major League Baseball, ATP, WTA, FIBA/IBF and over 150 basketball leagues worldwide.

The mix between SportingPulse and Betgenius will be an item to follow, as Betgenius has worked with many international bookmakers and lottery operators in driving turnover, increasing margins and acquiring consumers. Its clients include Paddy Power Betfair, Sky Betting & Gaming, Betsson and Intralot. Major League Baseball, now a client of Genius Sports alongside the aforesaid bookmakers, has traditionally been an ardent opponent of legalized sports betting across the United States, but even that may be changing.

“What I’ve said about legalized gambling is that the landscape is changing and that baseball, during this offseason, principally will take a look at its relationships with legalized gambling — whether it’s sponsorship, whatever — and re-evaluate given that the country has changed in terms of its approach to legalized gambling,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in November 2015.

Earlier in 2015, Manfred said that MLB needs to give “fresh consideration” to legalized sports betting, and that it is important for there to be a conversation between him and MLB owners about what MLB’s institutional position will be.

ports betting largely remains illegal across the U.S. despite illegal gambling being at an all-time high. The results of Manfred’s offseason discussions are unknown, along with whether there will be a change in MLB’s institutional position. However, MLB is now a partner alongside numerous sports betting and lottery entities that look to Genius Sports to improve customer performance and drive profits.

“Genius Sports has a new name and a new look, but our mandate, mission and values remain the same,” said Nick Maywald, founder of SportingPulse and now Genius Sports’ CCO. “We believe the collection, protection and commercialisation of sports data is critical to the future success and growth of the sports industry. We understand that as a leading sports data and technology provider, we must build on our reputation as a trusted partner to the sports industry with innovation, intelligence and integrity.”

One of the popular products offered by Betgenius (and now Genius Sports) has been “Sportsbook Management,” which includes a sportsbook manager that is promoted as a vehicle to increase a bookmaker’s revenues and automate 195,000+ events per year with event creation, pricing and resulting included therein. “It’s a product respected by the entire industry,” said the editor of OnlineCasinoReports.com. “Data points cover over 4,500 events per month.”

Perhaps MLB is not any closer than it has ever been to accepting the potential of legalized gambling on its product outside of Nevada. It has used SportingPulse’s services to monitor and protect its sport as well as to prevent and manage integrity concerns associated with match-fixing and betting-related corruption. SportingPulse’s merger with Betgenius could be nothing more then a coincidence for the league, but it also has the potential to further educate Manfred and other MLB executives on why sports betting should not pose a problem for the integrity of the sport, especially if the league is equipped with a vehicle focused on killing corruption and maintaining integrity.

An event at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center this Wednesday will focus on sports betting and integrity with a briefing titled, “The World of Sports Betting and Safeguarding Sports Integrity.” Mark Locke, newly named CEO of Genius Sports, is listed as a panelist at the discussion to be focused on the global issues, opportunities and public opinion associated with legal and regulated sports betting. Maybe a transcript of the event will appear on Manfred’s desk come Thursday morning.
