188bet to Offer Anonymous Tables

Online gaming provider 188BET recently launched Microgaming’s poker software, one that includes anonymous tables and signifying a move to begin offering its online poker clientele the choice of playing in tables where player profiles are unavailable, including aliases, avatars, locations, and notes. 188BET’s decision to introduce anonymous tables comes a little over a year after Bodog fully committed itself to the model when it launched its Recreational Poker Model in late 2011.

For all the criticisms and vitriol thrown at Bodog when it launched its Recreational Poker Model, anonymous tables seemed to have gained a foothold in the industry, particularly in light of 188BET’s recent move to launch its own (slightly different) version.

Bodog’s Recreational Poker Model and its anonymous tables have always had one objective in mind: to protect the interests of the net depositing players by trying to create a more level playing field. It’s a field that player tracker tools and data-mining sites won’t get access to, allowing the site’s casual players to enjoy the game without having to worry about being hunted down by the poker sharks who rely on tracking software to determine where the prey is playing.

When Bodog launched this model a little over a year ago, it came with the expected backlash from a lot of established players in the online poker circuit, a lot of whom complained in their own choice language about losing a critical advantage that these data-mining sites and player tracking software offered.

However, that’s exactly what Bodog was striving to achieve with its anonymous tables; keep the Rottweilers on a leash and let the poodles scamper about and enjoy themselves. The model created an eco-system where the sharp poker players aren’t just draining money away from the recreational players, thereby enabling everyone to rely on their skills more than using data-mining sites and HUDs as advantageous crutches.

Now, the industry has taken notice, as evidenced by 188BET’s decision to launch their own anonymous tables that are part Microgaming’s poker software. The gambling Industry Swami himself, Calvin Ayre, called this move a year ago when he predicted that at least one other poker network would eventually adopt this model as its own.

It must be noted though, that Microgaming already used a limited version of anonymous tables before Bodog, but according to Bodog Network vice president Jonas Odman, their interpretation and implementation of the software differed from Bodog’s version. “At those sites, [anonymous tables] are an alternative to normal tables,” Odman noted back in December 2011 when the Bodog Model had just been launched.

The problem with having anonymous tables as an alternative is that net depositing players – the group identified as the lifeblood of online poker – do not realize the benefits of sitting in an anonymous table. Instead, they sit down at non-anonymous tables, putting themselves at risk of having their profiles tracked. “The winning players then follow the net depositing players, which means that nobody plays at the anonymous tables,” Odman noted.

Awareness still falls on the shoulders of the players themselves, but what happens when these casual players are there to enjoy themselves without knowing what an anonymous table really is? The responsibility of offering a level playing field is on the operator and Microgaming’s optional anonymous tables aren’t exactly “optional” if they use them more as marketing tools and the casual players don’t know what it’s all about in the first place.

Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see a major Asian operator taking a similar approach to Bodog and offering its own recreational poker model. It would’ve been better if 188BET decided to make all their tables anonymous to really level the playing the field. In the end though, the benefits of having anonymous tables is becoming more evident, proving that there’s a lot more to this model than the critics have slammed it to be. Heck, it could even potentially be the future of the industry.

Poker has, and will always be – and is supposed to be – a game of skill. With anonymous tables, there’s no other option than to pit those skills to the test against the rest of the table. That’s how poker should be in the first place.

188Bet seals first Rugby League sponsorship deal

Continuing to invest in UK sports, in-play sports betting specialist 188Bet.com has signed a one-year partnership deal to become the official betting partner of rugby league football club Wigan Warriors, under which 188BET’s logo will also be displayed on the club’s home and away shirt sleeves for the 2010 season.

As the club’s official betting partner for the 2010 season, 188Bet will also offer match day betting services to fans at the DW Stadium as well as an online betting service for Warriors supporters.

The deal with Wigan Warriors represents 188Bet’s first sponsorship agreement in rugby league and follows a twelve-month period that has seen the company establish itself in UK sport, in particular Premiership football.

Last year 188Bet signed two shirt sponsorship deals with Premier League football clubs, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, while the company is also the official betting partners to Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, and rugby union side London Wasps RFC.

Wigan Warriors signed a headline sponsorship deal with Rank’s online bingo business MeccaBingo.com last year, with the Bingo brand displayed on the front and back of the Warriors’ home and away shirts.

“188Bet are already establishing themselves as a big name in professional team sports,” said Wigan Warriors Chief Executive Mick Hogan. “We are delighted that they have now extended their support to Wigan Warriors for 2010. Having listened to their future plans regarding sports sponsorship we are excited to be in partnership with them for the forthcoming season.”

“Having already developed a strong relationship with Wigan Athletic FC the company was keen to also associate itself with Wigan Warriors,” added Andy Scott, CEO of 188Bet. “The Club is a likeminded and progressive organisation with similar ambitious plans for the future that will allow 188Bet to enter into a new sporting sector. Wigan Warriors has a strong brand profile in England and internationally and we see them as the ideal partner and look forward to developing the association further.”

Wigan Warriors is the most successful and illustrious British rugby league club in history, mainly due to the club's successes in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this period the club won the Challenge Cup eight seasons in a row and the League Championship seven seasons in a row.

One of the most well supported British rugby league clubs, Wigan Warriors play their home games at the 25,000 all-seater DW Stadium.

Premier League concern at gambling on junior matches may lead to regulation

The Premier League has pledged to ensure football's relationship with the betting industry is properly regulated after it emerged junior matches can now be gambled on.

SBObet and 188bet, who are both licensed on the Isle of Man, offer live betting on matches at Premier League under-18 level and similar matches across Europe including the German Bundesliga under-17 league. Both betting firms have a presence in the Premier League through tie-ups with several leading clubs.

SBObet are shirt sponsors of West Ham, while 188bet sponsor Bolton and Wigan and are the official gaming partner of Chelsea and official betting partner of Aston Villa.

Betting on junior matches does not contravene any rules, however the Premier League will examine the issue. A Premier League spokesman told the Sunday Telegraph: "We are alarmed at these developments and are currently discussing this matter with our clubs and the government. What is clear is that this further highlights the need for the relationship between sport and the gambling industry to be properly regulated in order to protect the integrity of sport."

The Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor said: "It is making our youngsters vulnerable, without a shadow of a doubt. Youngsters and gambling is a bad mix, and an unhealthy one."

A spokesman for 188bet said that the company is committed to protecting "betting integrity" and stressed they were unaware of any concerns from the Premier League or PFA. The spokesman said: "A key element of our betting governance includes setting lower bet limits on smaller markets, such as Premier League Academy games, to ensure that maximum individual bets and total bet volume is not of a size that would influence any sporting outcome."
